W/R/T tolerating intolerance: think of this as a party to which we've all been invited. If you start insulting and/or attacking the other guests, the hosts will get annoyed. Indeed, not a few of your fellow guests may also get annoyed.

In your own house (blog), you can be as rude as you like. This, however, is not your house (blog).

It looks like bold and italic tags are stripped. I meant to highlight the d at the end of that phrase.

Regarding 'splaining: as a heterosexual* white woman, I have nevertheless spent a good deal of time and thought on the subject of racism and homophobia. So... where is the line drawn between "'splaining" and discussing? Is it ok to have thoughts and opinions on a subject despite never having been personally affected by it? Is it possible for an "outsider" to still have relevant input, or suggest a possible interpretation that an "insider" may not have considered before?

I'm not trying to sound defensive, I do want to know. I don't want to ever give offense, but in some boards and communities there's a feeling that if you haven't experienced prejudice personally, your thoughts on the matter are automatically invalid. (I've even seen some where people have gotten offended that someone dares to relate with a group other than their own - as in, "how dare that person try to 'appropriate' our experience and act like she knows what it's like?") That's not an argument I'm interested in having, so if I could know how people differentiate ahead of time, I'd be grateful.

*technically, I'm bisexual-slightly-skewed-towards-heterosexual, but as I've never had an exclusively lesbian relationship nor experienced any prejudice, it would be dishonest for me to claim I "understand the queer experience" based on that. When it comes to questions of privilege, I am for all practical purposes heterosexual.

(just realized I'd forgotten to finish my asterisk *sheepish grin*)

It's over the line from discussing to 'splaining at the point where you claim superiority for your own (lack of) experience over the other person's experiences. Also when you are talking but not listening, as if there was no chance that the other person might know something valuable.

I think that white people can have perfectly valid and valuable comments on racism, and men on womens' issues. But not *more* valid or *more* valuable than the comments of minorities and women. And whenever it's not one's own experience in question, one should be quicker to listen and slower to speak.

Amusingly, I just happened to open this FNE page while looking through the musty archives of old Slacktivist for a little something, and I just happened to have open in another tab, the Patheos copy of the original "kill you with sheep" comment, from aunursa. So, I figured I'd leave the link here, for enlightenment and posterity:
slacktivist » TF: The second-biggest story - http://www.patheos.com/blogs/slacktivist/2009/06/19/tf-the-secondbiggest-story/

Can't link to the different pages of the Disqus comments, but "kill you in your sleep" is on page 4, the misinterpretation as "kill you with sheep" is on page 6, and my own humble contribution to the meme is on page 7.

And having located that, I would like to humbly propose that June 21st be known henceforth as Slactivist Killing With Sheep Day across the Slacktiverse.
