Non-random 10

What was the girl with the snake skins' name?

Been doing the "random 10" thing for a while. Problem with it is it gives you no way of identifying gaps and oversights. Alphabetical lists are also basically arbitrary, but let the reader play along by recommending songs that ought to be included, but aren't, of which I am sure there are many.

So here's the non-random 10 (starting, for reasons nearly explained in the previous post, immediately following "Pancho and Lefty"):

"Panic Beach," Maria McKee
"Papa Danced on Olvera Street," Terry Taylor
"Paradise," Bruce Springsteen
"Paranoid Android," Radiohead
"Particle Man," TMBG
"Pass It On," Lone Justice
"Pasties and a G-String," Tom Waits
"Peace on Earth," U2
"People Are Strange," Echo and the Bunnymen
"People Get Ready," Curtis Mayfield

What...no "Papa Don't Preach"?!?

I came up with 33 songs from my iPod that are not on this list but, alphabetically speaking, could be. From that selection, I give you the "Based Upon My Admittedly-Imperfect Understanding Of Fred's Musical Tastes, My Friday Non-Random Top Ten Songs That Fred Should Get That Fall Alphabetically Between 'Pancho And Lefty' and 'People Get Ready'":

1. "Paper In Fire," John Mellencamp
2. "Paper Tiger," Beck
3. "Paperback Writer," The Beatles
4. "Pass In Time," Beth Orton
5. "Passing Strangers," Ultravox
6. "Paul Robeson (Born To Be Free)," Black 47
7. "Peace In The Valley," Johnny Cash
8. "Peg," Steely Dan
9. "Pencil Rain," They Might Be Giants
10. "Penny Lane," The Beatles

(#11-33 available upon request. Yeah, like that'll happen.)

Here's my next 10 (out of 22) - I'm not going to try to interpret Fred's musical tastes. :-)

"Papa Come Quick (Jody And Chico)", Bonnie Raitt
"Papa-Oom-Mow-Mow", The Rivingtons
"Paperback Writer", The Beatles
"Parade", Derek Bell
"Parade Of The Ewoks", Erich Kunzel; Cincinnati Pops Orchestra
"Parade Of The Ewoks", London Symphony Orchestra
"Paradise By The 'C'", Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band (Live)
"Paradise Cove", Tangerine Dream
"Parker's Mood", Charlie Parker
"Parliament Of Dreams (1)", Christopher Franke

also consider that unless the iPod is programmed w/ a numeric series generated from radioactive decay or cosmic rays it's not really random

You mean yours isn't?

It's certainly a problem on my MuVo; the random-song-sequence tends to repeat after about twenty songs. Hit skip-forward a few dozen times to clear things up.

The mp3-cd player in my car has the same problem.

alas I haven't upgraded to iPod ver. LNe(x)

cjmr's husband: wouldn't repeating be a sign of more randomness? I suppose it depends on how the machine was programmed, I see 3 immediate approaches:
a) take all tracks, assign a value, arrange all values in random order at the start, play from arrangement.
b) select track, remember which one, select track from "all tracks less previous played", continue until no tracks remain.
c) play random track from all, repeat (without remembering)
So which would be the most "random"

d) Generate list of 20 songs from 200. Play them. Repeat. In the same order.

It's not THAT bad. It just SEEMS that way. I'll cope.

The most random (mathematically speaking) would be (c), but the most aesthetically pleasing would probably be (a) or (b); I think (a) and (b) are actually equivalent.

Also: whoever is listening to "Parliament of Dreams" just like me: you rock.

d) = radio :)

Hmmm, the only overlap from P to the end of People is Paranoid Android...
P.E.T.R.O.L. - Orbital
Pack the Pipe - Pharcyde
Packt Like Sardines In A Crushd Tin Box - Radiohead
Pagan Poetry - Bjork
Paint a Vulgar Picture - Smiths
Pale Blue Eyes - Velvet Underground
Panic - Smiths
Papa Legba - Talking Heads
Paper - Talking Heads
Papua New Guinea - Future Sound of London
Parachutes - Coldplay
Parakeet - REM
Party Bag - Add N to X
Party Hard - Pulp
Pashernate Love - Morrissey
Passing Me By - Pharcyde
Pay No Mind - Beck
Pearly Dewdrops' Drop - Cocteau Twins
Peckings - Ballistic Brothers
Pencil Skirt - Pulp
Penny Lane - Beatles
Pennyroyal Tea - Nirvana
People Like Us - Talking Heads

that's without the classical music. A surprising amount of dance music, and I'm a little surprised that a chunk of music that big doesn't contain any Belle & Sebastian.

Here's my library following "Pancho and Lefty" (Willie & Merle, if you care to ask), begining with "Pa...," and trying not to overlap with anyone else:

"Panic in Detroit" David Bowie
"Panthers" Wilco
"Paper Cuts" Nirvana
"Paperface" Weezer
"Par for the Course" Amiee Mann
"Parachute Woman" Rolling Stones
"Paradise City" Guns N' Roses
"Paranoid" Black Sabbath
"Part 1 > Acknoledgment" John Coltrate (from "A Love Supreme")
"Parting Ways" Pearl Jam
"Party for Your Right to Fight" Public Enemy
"Passenger Seat" Death Cab for Cutie
"Passenger Side" Wilco
"Pastichio Medly" Smashing Pumpkins
"Pastime Paradise" Stevie Wonder
"Pastures of Plenty" Woody Guthrie
"Paths of Victory" Bob Dylan
"Pay Me My Money Down" Bruce Springsteen

Btw, if there's a sadder song than "Pale Blue Eyes," I'll buy it from you.

cminus - let's see 11-33.

Now that I'm on my home machine with iTunes, I'm astounded to see how much of the P section is Weird Al. It's those Polkas that do it.

Party At The Leper Colony - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Phony Calls - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Pinch Me - Barenaked Ladies
Piss On The Wall - J. Geils Band
Polka Party! - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Polka Power - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Polka Your Eyes Out - "Weird Al" Yankovic
PolkaMon - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Polkas On 45 - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Pretty Fly For a Rabbi - "Weird Al" Yankovic
Promises in the Dark - Pat Benatar
Punkboys Incorporated - Project Vector

“Para Machucar Meu Coração,” Stan Getz & João Gilberto
“Passion,” Peter Gabriel

“Penance,” Ennio Morricone
“Pendulum Man,” Bark Psychosis

Parklife - Blur
Pass The Hatchet - Roger & The Gypsies
Passive Manipulation - The White Stripes
Paul Revere - The Beastie Boys
Penelope Please - Terence Trent D'Arby
People Get Ready - The Housemartins
People Suck - Bill Hicks
People We Want - Kenickie

Okay, 11-33, in rough decreasing order of likely interest to Fred:

11. "Peace Tonight," Indigo Girls
12. "People Are Strange," The Doors
13. "Papasan," Lush
14. "Paper Doll, Tuscadero
15. "Pentagram," Cake
16. "Peace Frog," The Doors
17. "Peek-A-Boo!," Devo
18. "Paris When It Burns," Pat McCurdy (pre-Iraq war, when making fun of the French wasn't a political statement, this would have finished much higher. Still a fun song from a criminally underappreciated artist.)
19. "Peaches," The Stranglers (not the same song as)
20. "Peaches," The Presidents Of The United States Of America
21. "Paquito," Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
22. "Paradise City," Guns 'N Roses
23. "Paradise City," Pat Boone (yes, it's that "Paradise City," and that Pat Boone.)
24. "Paradise By The Dashboard Light," Meat Loaf
25. "Peace Of Mind," Boston
26. "Pendulum," The Toasters
27. "Party," Boston
28. "People Are Tasty," Boogie Knights
29. "Park Avenue," Girls Against Boys
30. "Paul Revere," The Beastie Boys
31. "Party Hard," Pulp
32. "Parallel Life," The Starseeds

In creating this list, I have presumed from earlier FRTs that Fred is not a big fan of ska, metal, filk, alternative hardcore, rap, techno, or the smooth vocal stylings of:
33. "Party All The Time," Eddie Murphy

Incidentally, on this subject I would like to thank Fred for doing this variant on the FRT, which is interesting, and for reminding me in an earlier FRT that I still didn't have a digital version of "The Whole Of The Moon."
