Glory to God
If there's anything better than this / I'd like to know ...
"Glory and the Dream," Vigilantes of Love
"Glory Days," Bruce Springsteen
"Gloryhound," da
"Go Away Little Boy," Lone Justice
"Go Down Easy," Over the Rhine
"God Bless the Child," Billie Holiday
"God Give Me Strength," Elvis Costello and Burt Bacharach
"God Is Watching You," Leslie Phillips
"God Only Knows," The Beach Boys
"God Only Knows," Claudine Longet
"God Went Bowling," The Swirling Eddies
"God's Gonna Cut You Down," Johnny Cash
"Go Down Easy" is Exhibit A for why nobody does languid and sultry better than Over the Rhine. "Gloryhound" ought to be the Keyboard Kommandos Fight Song ("Strap down, secure the weekend warrior / To his T.V. seat, some kind of gloryhound / A flack jacket yuppie in a camouflage jeep"). The Johnny Cash track is from his final album, "American V: A Hundred Highways." If Cash had lived to record "American VI," I'd love to have heard it include the Leslie Phillips song above. It was the final cut on her final "CCM" record -- the last thing she had to say to the Christian ghetto in Nashvegas before changing her name and leaving for Star's Hollow.
In comments below, let me know what I'm missing in this alphabetical range. (Or feel free to suggest other tracks you wish Johnny Cash had recorded for "American VI.")

Glory - People You Meet
God - Grammatrain
God - John Lennon
God - Tori Amos
God Part II - U2
God Part III - Larry Norman

God Sends Quails - The 77's
God Will Lift Up Your Head - Jars of Clay

Glancing through my music, one that Johnny would have done nicely is Daniel Lanois' "Sleeping in the Devil's Bed".

Glory - Liz Phair
Glow Girl - The Who
Go - Wayne Shorter
Go Cave! - Scissorfight
Go, Hippie - Fountains of Wayne
God Bows to Math - The minutemen
God Killed the Queen - Louis XIV
Glow Girl is a nice little 60s song that would probably appeal to people who don't really like The Who, at least the 1970s AOR Who. But the funny thing is, none of these songs are particularly memorable. And other than the Billie Holiday I'm not very impressed by Fred's list compared to his usual offerings. This could be an alphabet range with very mediocre music.

They actually will be releasing an American VI, late in 2006 or early in '07, featuring songs from the same sessions as A Hundred Highways.

I just don't do Glory to God...
Glory Days - Pulp
Glosoli - Sigur Ros
Go to Sleep - Radiohead
God (Interlude) - Andre 3000
if I did it would be Belle and Sebastian style -
"If you find yourself caught in love
Say a prayer to the man above
Thank him for everything you know
You should thank him for every breath you blow
If you find yourself caught in love
Say a prayer to the man above
You should thank him for every day you pass
Thank him for saving your sorry ass
If you're single, but looking out
You must raise your prayer to a shout
Another partner must be found
Someone to take your life beyond
Another TV I Love 1999
Just one more box of cheapo wine..."
(had to work them in somehow)

The entire selection this time.
"Glynis," Smashing Pumpkins
"Go Ahead, Make My Day (dialogue)," Clint Eastwood
"Go Daddy-O," Big Bad Voodoo Daddy
"Go Home Paddy," Black 47
"Go Let It Out," Oasis
"Go Spread Your Wings," Godflesh
"Go To The Mirror/Listening To You," Broadway Cast of The Who's Tommy
"Go With The Flow," Queens Of The Stone Age
"Go Your Own Way," Fleetwood Mac
"Go!," Tones On Tail
"God," Pat McCurdy
"God Created Woman," Johnny Dowd
"God In An Alcove," Bauhaus
"God Is In The Radio," Queens Of The Stone Age
"God Part II," U2
"God's Lake," Meg Hentges
Nothing really unlistenable, but a fairly weak selection for the most part. Meg Hentges and Queens Of The Stone Age's "God Is In The Radio" do merit recommendation, but the real star in the firmament here is Pat McCurdy's "God." A wonderful tongue-in-cheek skewering of Christianist pieties.

Johnny Cash recording "Have I the Right" by the Honeycombs would have been heartbreaking. The final chorus, as we all know, is:

I've got some love and I long to share it
Come right back, right back where you belong

Two more songs I think Cash cold have covered...I just heard for the first time this week, both off of T Bone Burnett's newest album:
There Would Be Hell To Pay
Blinded By the Darkness

"Gloryhound" is up there with Costello's "Shipbuilding" as among the smartest anti-war songs ever. Nice choice!
I really, really want to get behind the Johnny Cash American Recordings stuff, but I just can't. I love the idea of them, but he lost so much of his range toward the end, the recordings seemed like exploitation. Tell me how I'm wrong? I much prefer Elvis Presley's and Moby's version of "God's Gonna Cut You Down."
A few additional songs:
"Go Mental," Ramones (Road to Ruin)
"Go On Ahead" Liz Phair (Whitechocolatespaceegg--her best album by far!)
"Go Where You Wanna Go" The Mamas and the Papas (If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears)

Brent, I'll gladly tell you where you are wrong. The beauty of Cash's final discs was THAT he'd lost his range and booming voice...and instead of belting out his tunes, he offered then with honesty and fraily. Not always beautiful, but BEAUTIFUL.
That being said, I love American Recordings I-IV, but haven't heard V yet.
See further this review of AR IV: http://www.dwightozard.com/lq-article.asp?id=54
And Cash’s baritone does waiver. The ravages of time, hard living and disease have taken much of the power from his legendary voice—the deep notes no longer resonate with his distinctive, nearly seismic rumble. But where the younger Cash might have song through a lyric, he now is forced to cling to every syllable for dear life, like it might be his last, singing through a frailty that gives the song an air of dynamic, painstakingly beautiful immediacy. It’s yet another example of a great artist—and theologian—at work, as Cash has taken his weakness and transformed it into his strength. Indeed, while his voice may be less than it was, his singing has never been better.
