Steve --
If not the best of the Schoolhouse Rock songs, certainly the sweetest:
"Mister Morton knew just one girl
Mister Morton knew
Mister Morton grew flowers for Pearl
Mister Morton grew ..."
It's like "Eleanor Rigby" except with a happy ending and a grammar lesson.

"Mr. Tambourine Man," William Shatner
"Mr. Wilson," Optiganally Yours
"Mrs. Bean," The Essex Green
"Mrs. Forbes' Leith Reel," Carl McKenzie
"Mrs. McGhee Jig," Cape Breton Island Festival Ensemble
Low on the distaff portion, but that seems common. Oddly, the "Mrs." songs are all from my folk/neo-folk/folk-rock category.
My top suggestion here is the transcendent "Mr. E's Beautiful Blues." Everyone in the world should hear this song, no fooling. The peppy but dark-humored "Mr. Bad Example," Warren Zevon at his most playful, is a strong runner-up. "Mr. And Mrs. Money" and "Mr. Mastodon Farm" are also highly recommended.

Fred,
I wasn't actually commenting on the original "Mr. Morton", which to be honest I don't recall. I was referring to the song on the alt-rock tribute album.
BUT, a cool thing about having small children is I have this one friend who, instead of buying my boys the latest DVD's at birthday or Christmas, he buys them things like Mr. Rogers DVD's and the complete Schoolhouse Rock collection on DVD. And then I watch them.
So I'm gonna go cue up the original Mr. Morton.

Candi Staton - Mr And Mrs Untrue
John Coltrane - Mr. Day
John Coltrane - Mr. Knight
John Coltrane - Mr. Syms
Kate Bush - Mrs. Bartolozzi
Method Man - Mr. Sandman

Randy Newman - Mr. President (Have Pity On The Working Man)
Stereophonics - Mr Writer

"Mr. Tanner" -- Harry Chapin
*sigh* Nobody much remembers Harry at all anymore, which is a great shame. But this was always one of my favorites:
"Mr. Tanner was a cleaner from a town in the Midwest
And of all the cleaning shops around, he'd made his the best...
But music was his life, though not his livelihood
It made him feel so happy. It made him feel so good
That he sang from his heart, and he sang from his soul
He did not know how well he sang. It just made him whole."

My favorite line from the songs on your list: "... and a ten-pound flashlight rolling in the trunk."
Posted by: howard | Oct 12, 2006 at 09:05 AM
Hey, I still remember Harry Chapin, although my copy of "Mr. Tanner" is on cassette only, which is why it didn't make the list.
I like "Mr. Tanner," but I always thought the last few lines (the ones beginning "excepting very late at night...") were a cop-out. It would have been a lot more powerful for the song to end on the previous line. If it'd been done that way, "Mr. Tanner" would surpass even "Cats In The Cradle" in the pantheon of patented-Harry Chapin-style songs where you realize with a dawning sense of horror that the chorus doesn't mean what you thought it meant.
