Pilgrimage to Please

everyone is, everything is broken

"Pilgrimage," R.E.M.
"Pillar to Post," Aztec Camera
"Pineapple Head," Crowded House
"Pink Cashmere," Prince
"Pink Houses," John Cougar Mellencamp
"Pink Moon," Nick Drake
"Planet Telex," Radiohead
"Please Don't Go," Violent Femmes
"Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want," The Smiths
"Please Send Me Someone to Love," Fiona Apple

Re: "Please Don't Go," Brian Ritchie rules.

Listen to "Pink Houses" and then listen to Mellencamp's revisiting of the same theme in that song of his they're now using to sell beer or pickup trucks or whatever it is the ad is for. The contrast is like a clinic in the importance of details.

And, yeah, that link for "Pink Moon" is to the Volkswagen commercial. Remember when that ad came out and people recoiled in horror from the sacrilege? But then some others argued that at least the ad would help to introduce Nick Drake to a new audience. Well, I was part of that new audience, so I'm gratefully fond of that ad.

Comments

Playground For A Wedgeless Firm - Chemical Brothers
Playground Love - Air
Please Forgive Me - David Gray

Hmm, I used to have the REM, Violent Femmes, and Smiths songs - must have been on tape. Time to get the credit card out...

Speaking of songs that are incongruous to the commercials they appear in: Richard Buckner's _Ariel Ramirez_ as a Volkswagon ad - or at least that Volkswagon ad. It might have been apt if they were coming out with a line of technicolor VW buses.

But, that song is now on my favorites playlist, and I'd never heard of him before.

"Pilgrimage," Nine Inch Nails

"Please Don't Bend" Desmond Dekker
"Please Lock The Door," Pat McCurdy And The Confidentials
"Please Pass The Milk," They Might Be Giants
"Please Stand Up," British Sea Power
"Please Stay," Warren Zevon

The top recommendation is Warren Zevon's grim-eyed ode to the South, "Play It All Night Long," followed closely by British Sea Power's anything-but-grim "Please Stand Up."

Like Ray, I apparently need to update my Violent Femmes collection to digital.

The unsigned one previously is from me -- how did "Remember personal info?" get deselected?

Lots of Celtic music in this bunch. I can't believe I'm the first one to post the Beatles, though.

"Pillars of Salt" - Murder by Death
"Pimp" - Shivaree
"Pimpin' All Over the World" - Ludacris
"Pin (Remix)" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Pink Moon" - Damien Jurado (yep, it's a cover)
"Pinned Together, Falling Apart (Live)" - the Dears
"Pioneer Skies" - Chemical Brothers
"Pioneers" - Tunng (also a cover)
"Pissing" - Low
"Pitbull" - Jega

That was a particularly bizarre selection.

Re: "Please Don't Go," Brian Ritchie rules.

True enough, though if you ever saw them in concernt, Victor DiLorenzo, rock's most peripitetic percussionist, made the show.
