The Doors, Pink Floyd, Green Day and Aerosmith tracks are essentials if you like the genre, and the Karen Matheson number is very good if you like lilting Celtic women, but for Fred's purposes I'd probably recommend Cake's version of "Walk On By", followed by the Stranglers' version of "Walk On By" (not the same song as Cake's) and "Walk Through The Fire". "Wake Up Go To Work" deserves mention for its mordantly cheerful treatment of the life of quiet desperation (the chorus begins "Wake up, go to work, get drunk, go to sleep", to give you an idea), but it's a something of a rarity and I'm not the kind of person who would recommend something the recommendee probably couldn't find.

...I discovered Sarah McLachlan on the Due South soundtracks. ...great collections of music.

Tommy Emmanuel has some interesting stuff, too.
