Friday
Hmm, what if we did this Friday music thing as a kind of quiz?
1. "patience is like bread I say / I ran out of that yesterday"
2. "You float like a feather / In a beautiful world"
3. "All your compliments and your cutting remarks / Are captured here in quotation marks"
5. "The light was leaving / In the west it was blue"
6. "Mannequin left! Mannequin right!"
7. "When you believe in things that you don't understand / Then you suffer"
8. "Cause a pressure drop, oh pressure / Oh yeah pressure drop a drop on you"
9. "if I look up and the sky's not there / is there any reason that I should be scared?"
10. "tramps like us and we like tramps"
Went to a wedding last Saturday just to make the groom nervous. There, of course, I heard again the reminder that marriage "signifies to us the mystery of the union between Christ and his church." Following the liturgy, the priest grabbed that metaphor with both hands and squeezed until it became a more precise and manageable equation. But in song No. 4 above, Mr. Finn manages to find something fresh and new in that metaphor -- quite a feat after 2,000 years -- with a reminder that mystery is, among other things, bewildering.
Anyway, in lieu of a link for No. 6, here's a nifty vid "lonzo625" put together for a similar song:

That was, quite possibly, the best music video I've ever seen in my entire life, or am likely to ever see in the future.
Quick checklist:
It's the eighties so where's our rocket packs -- The U.S. military has been testing them, but they're not there yet.
I thought by now I'd walk the moon -- Well, at least Neil Armstrong did...
And ride a car without no tires -- Nope.
And have a robot run the vacuum -- Roomba, check
And date a girl made out of wires -- Not yet
...
I thought by now we'd live in space -- Well, there's ISS...
And eat a pill instead of dinner -- Diet craze, check
And wear a gas mask on our face -- In Israel, at least...
a President of female gender -- Go Hillary !
...
No space men up above -- And probably never...
...
I thought by now we'd build a dome \ Around the world, control the weather -- Does global warming count ?
In every house, a picture phone; communicate a little better -- Internet, check in spades
So, what was that, 3/12 ? 25%... we're getting there.

#2 - "Creep" by Radiohead
#3 - "Everyday I Write the Book" by Elvis Costello
#6 - ? David Bowie's "Fashion"?
#7 - "Superstition" ... but I might not have remembered without Lila jogging my memory. ;-)
#8 - "Pressure Drop" (obviously) though I can't remember which 80s ska band sang it
#10 - ? Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run"?

Okay, I peeked in my iTunes -- "Pressure Drop" is by The Specials.

I thought the #6 was an At The Drive-In song, but only because they have a song called Mannequin Republic. I'm too lazy to check.

9. Pedro the Lion, "Promise". (I only had to peek for the album, It's Hard to Find a Friend.)
I only knew that one and "Creep", I'm sorry to say.
My song for the week (in quiz form, like yours) would have to be "Contentment? What's contentment? I am bald and impotent" (article about the song's background).

#4 is "Distant Sun" by Crowded House. One of my favorite songs ever, I never fail to smile when I hear it or read its lyrics!

Noone remembers 80s ska bands, but I hope that memories of Toots & the Maytals last for ever.
