Gift to Give

"The Gift," Lone Justice
"Gimme Shelter," The Rolling Stones
"Girl," Texas
"The Girl from Ipanema," Astrud Gilberto
"Girlfriend," Matthew Sweet
"Girlfriend in a Coma," The Smiths
"Girls Talk," Dave Edmunds
"Girls Talk," Elvis Costello & the Attractions
"Girls ...," Marshall Crenshaw
"Give All to Love," Niobe
"Give My Love to Rose," Johnny Cash

Comments

"Girl," The Beatles
"The Girl in Blue," Rev. Horton Heat
"Girl Singing in the Wreckage," Black Box Recorder

And just for the hell of it,
"Girls Talk (Alternate version from the 2 disc Rhino re-issue of Get Happy!)," Elvis Costello

Most of the alternate takes on the reissues aren't very good, but I like this one, and the alternate take of "New Amsterdam"

Finally one whose parameters I can meet.

"Gigi," Louis Jourdan
"Girl," Beatles
"Girls Talk," Linda Ronstadt's cover of the Costello song from "Mad Love."
"Give It Up or Let Me Go," Bonnie Raitt
"Give Me a Reason," Linda Ronstadt
"Give One Heart," Linda Ronstadt

"Girl", Beck
"Girl Anachronism", The Dresden Dolls
"Girl Let Me Touch You", Dr. Octagon
"Girls", Death In Vegas

By the way, while it's topical: Anyone who is upset to hear about the RIAA finally drawing blood may be interested to know about this tool at riaaradar.com, which will allow you to tell whether or not the music you are buying is benefiting the RIAA...

135 tracks for this one, but most of them start with "Girl," and looking over the list I see that I don't much like songs that start with "Girl." And as far as the "words sure start to look absurd when you see them repeated a hundred times" effect goes, girl has to be one of the worst. Things worth mentioning (apart from several excellent selections already listed):

"Girl Afraid," The Smiths
"Girlfriend is Better," Talking Heads
"Girls," Tricky

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Well, and the Gourds cover of "Gin and Juice" is fun.

"Gift med Näcken", Två Fisk och en Fläsk
"Gimme Danger", Iggy and the Stooges
"Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment", the Ramones
"Gimme Some Lovin'", the Blues Brothers
"Girl Friend", Jonathan Richman & the Modern Lovers
"Girl from the North Country", Bob Dylan
"Give Me Novocaine", Green Day

Ghost Riders in the Sky (What I love best about this version is how gloriously happy Johnny Cash looks...)

or Ghost Riders in the Sky without Muppets, if you insist.

Again just highlights, and mostly skipping things already listed

"Gimme Shelter", Patti Smith -- this is from her pretty new cover album Twelve
"Gimme the Car", Violent Femmes (12 recordings) -- this is on their self-titled album, which I still maintain is non-optional (okay, I guess it's technically a bonus track and not on the original LP release, so I'd let you skate if you had that, but I know you don't)
"Girl Anachonism", Dresden Dolls (5 recordings) -- I know someone already mentioned it, but it's one of my recent faves
"Girl from the North Country", Johnny Cash
"Girl Trouble", Violent Femmes -- I like this song better than Gimme the Car, but it's from an album which is more of a minority taste (but with American Music, Do You Really Want to Hurt Me?, Hey Nonny Nonny and Girl Trouble, it's right up there for me)
"Git them Pretty GIrls", Bad Livers

"(The) Girl can't help it": Little Richard
"(The) Girls and the Dogs": Scott Walker

"Giants," Sponge
"Giant Steps," John Coltrane
"Girl From the North Country," Bob Dylan
"Girl's Not Grey," AFI
"Give," Dishwalla
"Give It Back," Hoobastank
"Given To Fly," Pearl Jam

Furthermore, Matthew Sweet's "Girlfriend" is a great song to play on Guitar Heroes (or, in my case, Frets on Fire).

"Give Me Jesus" -- Fernando Ortega

"Girls Just Wanna Have Lunch" -- 'Weird Al' Yankovic
"Gimme All Your Lovin" -- ZZ Top
"Ghost Chickens In The Sky" -- Sean Morey

Wow. This list is slightly insane for me...

"Gimme Some Truth," Pearl Jam
"Gin and Juice," Snoop Dogg
"Ginandjuice," Richard Cheese (cover, country version. Hooray!)
"Girl," Beck
"Girl," Norman Blake & John Burnside
"Girl from the North Country," Waterboys
"Girl from Yesterday, The," The Eagles
"Girl in the Dirty Shirt, The," Oasis
"Girl in the Swing, The," Waterboys
"Girl Like That," Matchbox 20
"Girl U Want," Devo
"Girl U Want," Soundgarden cover of Devo (2 versions)
"Girly," The Refreshments
"Girly," Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers (cover, also I'm seeing them tomorrow. Rock.)
"Give a Little Bit," Goo Goo Dolls (bad cover of a song I don't like)
"Give Me Novacaine," Green Day
"Give Me Strength," Over the Rhine
"Given to Fly," Pearl Jam (only repeating because there are 11 versions)

What is Gin and Juice? It's not on the wikipedia Gin page, does it have anything to do with O.J. Simpson?

Hmph. I decide to jump in for one, and I barely have anything for the list.

Gigantor (cartoon theme) - performed by Helmet
Girls on Film - Duran Duran
Give Peace A Chance - John Lennon

cjmr's husband:

Ironically, you're kind of close with the OJ thing. It's from the line, "Rollin' down the street smokin' endo, sippin' on gin and juice." Snoop, it turns out, is a fan of Seagram's gin and orange juice.

Also, I had to look that up. I've rarely felt whiter than I do right now.

As always, excluding anything that doubles with Fred's list:

"Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," The Ramones
"Gimme Some Money," Spinal Tap
"Gimme Tha Power," Molotov
"Gimme The Car," The Violent Femmes
"Gimme The Prize," Queen
"Ginger Faye," Eddie From Ohio
"Girl," The Beatles
"Girl At The Bus Stop," My Drug Hell
"Girl Can't Help It," Journey
"Girl From Outer Space," Pat McCurdy And The Confidentials
"Girl Of An Age," EMF
"Girl On A Motorbike," Soho
"Girl U Want," Devo
"Girl, You'll Be A Woman Soon," Urge Overkill
"Girlfriend Is Better," Talking Heads
"Girls Get In Trouble," Yipes!
"Girls Just Want To Have Lunch," Weird Al Yankovic
"Girls On Film," Duran Duran
"Gitana," Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
"Gitana [Remix Fabuloso]," Los Fabulosos Cadillacs
"Give Blood," Pete Townshend
"Give Me Novacaine," Green Day
"Give The People What They Want," The Kinks

That's a very strong list. "Ginger Faye" is alternatingly restful and creepy and is further evidence that Eddie From Ohio's bookshelf looks an awful lot like mine (elsewhere, they draw from The Tortilla Curtain and Into The Wild; here, I'm pretty sure they read Bill Bryson's In A Sunburned Country). "Girl From Outer Space" is a bit of a rarity, but definitely worth seeking out. "Girlfriend Is Better" and "Give Blood" are top-notch efforts from legendary artists. But I'm going to give pride of place to the Kinks' "Give The People What They Want," a rare combination of high energy and low opinion of humanity:

The Roman promoters really did things right
They needed a show that would clearly excite
The attendance was sparse so they put on a fight
Threw the Christians to the lions, sold out every night
Give the people what they want!

Overshadowed by the above, but still worthy of recommendation: "Gimme Some Money" (early Spinal Tap, when they were only one of the World's Loudest Bands), "Girl At The Bus Stop," "Girl U Want" and "Give Me Novacaine." A lot of the other tracks are worth a listen too, if not necessarily likely to appeal to Fred.

Gimme Some Money is currently being used in an American Express commercial.

I rarely hear the background music on ads, so it was only on the third or fourth time I saw it that I recognised the line "You know what I want, or maybe you don't", and burst out laughing.

What's next? Weight Watchers advertising with Big Bottoms?

Give It to Me - J. Geils Band
Gimme My Radio - The Donnas
Gimme Gimme Good Lovin' - Crazy Elephant
Girl You Have Magic Inside You - Outrageous Cherry

What's next? Weight Watchers advertising with Big Bottoms?

That would be awesome.

I once saw Fight Club on TBS or something. It was sponsored by MasterCard. I stuck around and watched the horrible basic cable editing just because the irony never got old.

Wow, I may have to stop fast-forwarding through all the commercials on TiVo in order to see that.

What's next? Weight Watchers advertising with Big Bottoms?

Yep - and a [erectile dysfunction cure medicine]* commercial with "Sex Farm"

Just to be a tad pendantic - It's "Big Bottom" singular, not pluaral.

; )

* Weird - I mentioned the name of one of the more visible medicines, & it stopped me from posting due to "comment spam".

It is singular?

I don't have the original, just a Soundgarden cover, but that one is called "Big Bottoms."

Hm. Not much to add this week.

Gift Shop - The Tragically Hip (two versions)
Gipsy - Jesse Cook

Gimme A Pigfoot Bessie Smith
Gimme Shelter The Rolling Stones
Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! ABBA
Gin & Juice Phish
Gin And Juice The Gourds
Giordano: Andrea Chénier - L'Improvviso José Carreras
Gira Con Me Josh Groban
Girl The Beatles
The Girl From Ipanema Frank Sinatra
Girl From Ipanema Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass
Girl Of My Dreams Etta James
Girlfriend Is Better Talking Heads
The Girls Want to Be With the Girls Talking Heads
Give A Little Bit Supertramp
Give It Up Or Turn It A Loose James Brown
Give Me Back My Job Tom Petty/Bono/Willie Nelson/Johnny Cash
Give Me Love George Harrison
Give My Love to Rose Johnny Cash
Give Peace A Chance John Lennon

Let's see what the old fart has today:

"Gimme Back My Bullets" - Lynyrd Skynyrd
"Gimme Back My Bullets" - Kid Rock
"Girl Can't Help It" - Ed Maly
"Girl From Ipanema" - Oscar Peterson
"Give Me Back My Wig" - Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble

Hey, Kid Rock wasn't mine... I swear.... One of my kids musta put that on there.....

Gifted - Katarina and V-Twin (indie indie indie)
Gigantic - Pixies (for shame, slactivist readers!)
Girl - The Forget-Me-Nots (local Irish band)
Girl From Mars - Ash (Possibly their finest three-and-a-half minutes, which is saying something)
Girls - The Beastie Boys (Licensed to Ill is basically a small encyclopedia of ways hip-hop could have gone)
Girls - The Prodigy (unfortunately the only thing that's any good at all on their last album)
Girls Girls Girls - Jay-Z (the remix is missing the commas, grammar fans)
Girls & Boys - Blur (biggest single, I think)
Girls & Boys - Prince (not really a cover of the above, though I would pay a lot of money to hear such)
Girls Own Love - Andrew WK (first single, not even on the album! All the elements of Big Fun definitely present and correct)
