Kiss-Knife

I never was a cautious man ...

"Kiss," Prince
"Kiss Me," Sixpence None the Richer
"Kiss That Frog," Peter Gabriel
"Kissers and Killers," The Choir
"Kisses for the Misses," Richard Swift
"Kitchen," The Lemonheads
"Kite," Patty Griffin
"Kite," U2
"Kites Without Strings," The 77s
"Knife," Aztec Camera
"Knife," Grizzly Bear

I appreciate that the Sixpence song above isn't the cutting-edge of hipitude, but it is as well-crafted a pop song as the Prince tune just before it. Its selection by the producers of Dawson's Creek resulted in a bunch of people I like and admire being able to pay off their mortgages. That also resulted in a second, Dawson-ized video, but I prefer the one linked above -- Steve Taylor doing his best Richard Lester imitation.

Comments

Well, I pull a big ZERO on that range!

Not much this week...

"Kit Kat Jam," Dave Matthews Band (not sure why I still have DMB, but hey...)
"Kitchen," Lemonheads
"Klein Mandlebrot," Blue Man Group Soundtrack

I've got a whole crapload of stuff with Kin and Kno, but those don't count...

I was so disappointed by that Sixpence video. I kept waiting for her to wear a New York Herald Tribune shirt, and it never happened. Yes, I know it wasn't Truffaut, but neither was the Bande à part reference.

I first saw Jules et Jim after an ex started dating my best friend. Still the only new wave film I can't watch.

It's just outside the range, but I'm putting it to welcome our new poster (on the part 5 thread, at least)

Knokke-le-Zoute Tango - Jacques Brel

and if we're going to have that let's add:

Knocking on Heaven's Door - Ladysmith Black Mambazo

Yay Ladysmith Black Mambazo!

Zero: Kingdom Come goes straight to Knights of Cydonia

Don't hate the Sixpence song. It's also lyrically pretty brilliant, speaking as a literature geek. And it's a non-stupid Christian pop song, of which there are few.

I have that one, and . . .
Kiss the Children - Gram Parsons
Kissing is a Crime - The Carter Family
The Kneeling Drunkard's Plea - Johnny Cash

Very, very up-to-date, that's me.

I would love to hear that Ladysmith Black Mambazo cover.

Plenty of good songs in this range, you zeros better get some more music:

"Kiss" - Prince
"Kiss Me Like You Mean It" - Magnetic Fields.
"Kiss Me on the Bus" - Replacements
"Kissability" - Sonic Youth
"Kitchen" - the Lemonheads
"Kitty" - the Pogues
"Kizza Me" - Big Star
"Klactoveedsedstene" - 2 versions: 1. Charlie Parker 2.Wes Montgomery
"Klaunstance" - Charlie Parker
"Kleines Lied" - Blumfeld - once the hippest band out of Hamburg
"Knife's Edge" - Midnight Oil, from their hip pre-"Beds are Burning" days.

Looks like I must have deleted U2s "Kite", and good for me.

44 tracks, 4 already mentioned, and a few other nice ones:

"Kiss," cover by Art of Noise
"Kiss Of Life," Gene Loves Jezebel
"Kiss Off," Violent Femmes
"Kiss Them for Me," Siouxsie and the Banshees
"Kissing Families," Silversun Pickups
"Kite," Mascott
"Klavierstucke op.118," Johannes Brahms
"Knee-high," Solex (Solex is unique, and worth checking out, although I imagine most people won't like her.)

A few songs, some of more questionable taste...

"Kiss Me Where it Smells Funny" - The Bloodhound Gang (ahem)
"Kiss Me, Son of God" - They Might Be Giants (a truly great song)
"Kiss Off" - Violent Femmes (4 versions!)
"Kiss Them For Me" - Siouxsie & the Banshees (possibly actually from her "Creatures" side project)
"Kisses" - Tracy Bonham
"Klein Mandelbrot" - Blue Man Group

I still have most of my music on cassette. The only relevant ones in iTunes are

"Kiss Off," Violent Femmes
"Kissing the Lipless," The Shins

Kiss Me - Sixpence None The Richer
Kiss The Flame - Jewel
Kitchen Ware & Candy Bars - Stone Temple Pilots

"Kiss" - Unknown Artist - ./Hack//SIGN soundtrack
"Kiss (Art of Noise Mix)" - Tom Jones
"Kiss Him Goodbye" - The Nylons
"Kiss The Girl (Disney DDR Mix)" - Dance Dance Revolution
"Knight Rider (techno mix)" - Tronster

"Kiss of the Rat" - Sator
"Kjaere Ola Mann" - Dalarna Femund Spelmanslag
"Klippans centrum" - Torsson
"Knives" - Therapy?

"Knee Jerk" - Swirling Eddies
"A Knife in the Dark" - LOTR:FOTR soundtrack (composer: Howard Shore)

That Grizzly Bear song is awesome. I actually didn't get into them too much until I heard them do it a capella.

13 in that range...but that includes 3 versions of 'Kiss Off' and two of 'The KKK took my baby away.' And one mislabeled song.

But Fred, no Kiss Off at all? That...surprises me.

If Fred had an address set on his Amazon wishlist, he'd have some Femmes by now, he would...

"Kiss Eternal", Lords of Acid (2 versions)
"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang", Specimen
"Kiss Me Like You Mean It", Magnetic Fields -- 69 Love Songs is a must must must have, seriously folks.
"Kiss Me Only With Your Eyes", Future Bible Heroes -- this is Stephin Merritt from Magnetic Fields and one of the fellows from Figures on the Beach
"Kiss Me Where it Smells Funny", Bloodhound Gang -- what can I say, I think it's funny
"Kiss Me", Tin Tin
"Kiss Me, Son of God", They Might Be Giants
"Kiss Off", Cracktorch
"Kiss Off", The Etiquette
"Kiss Off", Violent Femmes (12 versions)
"Kiss Them for Me", Siouxsie and the Banshees
"Kiss of Death", New Order
"Kiss the Dirt", INXS
"Kiss the Eclipse", My Bloody Valentine
"Kissing Things", Sarah Cracknell
"Kissing", Bliss
"Kitten Intro", They Might Be Giants
"Kitty Waltz", The Carter Family
"Kitty", The Presidents of the United States of America
"Kleiner Mann, was nun?", Palastorchester
"Klockar Aleksanteri", Nordic Roots
"Klonen kann sich lohnen", Palastorchester
"Kneeling Drunkard's Plea", Johnny Cash
"Knees of My Bees", Alanis Morissette

I have only "Knife Chase" -- an instrumental from Tom Waits' "Bloody Money" -- to add

I have no idea how I came across your blog. Sometimes it's impossible to retrace my click trail, especially when surfing is the only thing that keeps me from going insane while stuck up in this cube. We used to work together at Allied. Just thought I'd say hi.

Julie

I've been beat to most of my qualifying tracks already, including the Blue Man Group: Audio track. But I just picked up Gaelic Storm's latest CD at their Denver concert last night (they love us best of all! We gave them their new fiddler! She used to be our good friend's violin teacher! Squee!), and it's got a track called

"Kiss Me I'm Irish".

...Of course. In addition, we have

"Kissing The Wall," by Wolfsheim, and
"Kite," by the drowned

Palast Orchester? Good one, and very good background music for the Weimar like times we're living in.

A short list, but a respectable one. As always, leaving out what's on Fred's list already:

"Kiss Kiss Bang Bang," Pat McCurdy
"Kiss Me," Yipes!
"Kiss Me, Son Of God," They Might Be Giants
"Kiss Off," Violent Femmes
"Kiss The Dirt," INXS
"Kit Carson," Bruce Cockburn
"Kite/Angel Of Harlem Medley," U2
"Kitty," Presidents Of The United States Of America
"Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," Johnny Cash
"Knife's Edge," Midnight Oil

My top recommendation would be "Kneeling Drunkard's Plea," because Johnny Cash singing about religion, even tangentially, always works, while second place goes to "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang." "Kiss Me, Son Of God" makes for an interesting listen when taken with the whole "Gay-Hatin' Gospel (pt. 5)" thread:

I destroyed a bond of friendship and respect
Between the only people left who'd even look me in the eye
Now I laugh and make a fortune
Off the same ones that I tortured
And a world screams, "Kiss me, Son of God"

As for the rest, the INXS and Midnight Oil songs are good examples of those bands' old-school styles. Everything else is worthwhile enough, but at this point I have to assume that, contra Todd Larason's efforts, if Fred doesn't have any Violent Femmes he must not want any.

I have only one in that range, but it's 17 minutes long -- does that count?

"Kitty's Back," Springsteen

but at this point I have to assume that, contra Todd Larason's efforts, if Fred doesn't have any Violent Femmes he must not want any.
The logic makes a certain amount of sense, I admit, but the conclusion is just so nonsensical that there's obviously a mistake somewhere else.

"Kiss on the Lips" -Julie Miller

OK, it begins with an article ("A"), but in a bibliography, if not a computer-generated list, it would appear in this range.

"Kiss of Life", by Peter Gabriel.

"Kiss & Makeup" by Whiskeytown
"Kiss Me" Guster

which is a little short.

Reaching over the line, a bit....

"Knocking on Heaven's Door" by Warren Zevon. A cover, but if there were ever an artist to cover that, it's Zevon. Likewise, his rendition "Back in the High Life Again" is amazing...in a punched in the gut way--like Children of Men...

The orginal video of Kiss Me made me fall in love with that song all over again.

Steve Taylor doing his best Richard Lester imitation.

Shouldn't that be "best Truffault imitation?"
