Red

Santa Claus is drunk in the ski room ...

"Red Hill Mining Town," U2
"Red House," Jimi Hendrix
"Red Rail 9," Twitchen Vibes
"Red Rain," Peter Gabriel
"Red Right Hand," Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
"Red Shoes," Elvis Costello
"Red Shoes by the Drugstore," Tom Waits
"Red, Red Rose," Emmylou Harris
"Red River," BoDeans
"Red Red Sun," INXS

The cassette function of my new turntable has liberated many treasures from the long-neglected Big Box O' Cassettes -- including that Twitchen Vibes track. The Vibes were one of two really good bands that we were lucky enough to have on our little college campus. Two former Twitchen Vibes (that I know of) are still making music: Christine Havrilla is touring the country, and Charlie's songs and music can be heard in his King Bonk podcasts. Both are worth checking out.

Bonus song: Just beyond this alphabetical range is "Redemption Song," here's Joe Strummer's version with the Mescaleros, although my favorite is probably the haunting duet he recorded with Johnny Cash shortly before they both left us.

Comments

Red-Eyed and Blue - Wilco

Red Clay Halo -- Gillian Welch

The Red Flag - Billy Bragg
Red High Heels - The Chalets
Red Rabbits - The Shins

Redford - (the obligatory) Sufjan Stevens

two versions of Red Red Wine, and two versions of Red Rubber Ball. Not impressive.

Red Sector A - Rush

and nothing else. (adds Red Rubber Ball to iTunes wishlist...)

Red Rain live with some guests you may have heard of.

In addition to what husband added, I have Red Barchetta by Rush.

Red River Rock: Johnny and the Hurricanes

Red Angel Dragnet - The Clash
Red Candles - Danielle Howle
Red River Valley - Roger McGuinn

Red Hot - Vanessa-Mae
Red Pill - White Plectrum

The latter is a Matrix-themed filk of "White Rabbit" by the Jefferson Airplane. I wrote it one con afternoon on a dare, and Keith does a great job of performing it despite being no Grace Slick.

Not a lot today, but what there is, is generally good:

"Red Angel Dragnet," The Clash
"Red Barchetta," Rush
"Red Footprints," Eddie From Ohio
"Red Light Fever," Liz Phair
"Red Sector A," Rush
"Red Summer Sun," Third Eye Blind
"Red Tide," Rush

Personally, I love me all three Rush songs, especially "Red Tide," but they're an acquired taste. So the most recommended song for the day is "Red Footprints," a beautiful neo-folk tune that somehow manages to be both soothing and thrillingly creepy. (I suppose any song where the chorus begins "Strangler of Baltimore" has an edge in the "thrillingly creepy" department.)

(Note to self: get "Red Rubber Ball.")

Wow. I thought I wouldn't have anything. Shows what I know.

"Red Army Blues," The Waterboys (surprised this isn't on Fred's list, seeing as how I learned about The Waterboys because of him)
"Red Cortina," The Saw Doctors
"Red Hot Moon," Rancid
"Red Light," U2
"Red Mosquito," Pearl Jam (4 versions)
"Red Summer Sun, The," Third Eye Blind

I also just discovered that my mp3 player has no less than 45 tracks it simply labels . Methinks I need to go fix some ID3 tags...

Not enough Qs, eh?

Well for the sake of completion:

Red Lenses - Rush

although my favorite is probably the haunting duet he recorded with Johnny Cash shortly before they both left us.

Back in the mid-90s, Henry Rollins told a story about how Joe Strummer and Johnny Cash met. Rick Rubin had invited Rollins to see Johnny Cash perform shortly after "American Recordings" was released. After the performance, they went back stage, and Joe Strummer was there too. Joe wanted to know why Johnny hadn't recorded a song that Joe had written for him for "American Recordings." Joe kept trying to jog Johnny's memory about it, telling him the title, when he'd sent the song, etc., but Johnny just couldn't remember it. Finally, Johnny says, "Joe. Sing your song for me." And Joe Strummer performed the song, a cappella, for Johnny Cash.

Johnny still didn't remember the song, but said he was going to go back and look for the tape. I guess he never found it, because the song apparently never got recorded (or it's being held back for "Unearthed Vol. II"). At any rate, that meeting most likely lead to them recording "Redemption Song" together.

Apropos of nothing, I know, but just thought I'd pass the story along....

Wow, I don't have much.

Red Dust - Calexico/Iron and Wine
Red Earth - Crash Vegas
Red Haired Boy - Honkeytonk Homeslice
Red Hot Mama - Widespread Panic
Red Tail Lights - Yonder Mountain String Band

Wow, only one song:

Red Rain: Peter Gabriel

Apparently Rush has a 'thing' about the color red.

"Red Angel Dragnet," The Clash
"Red Barchetta," Rush - Both album & Exit.. Stage Left version
"Red Dragon Tattoo," Fountains of Wayne
"Red Hot,"Bill Riley & the Little Green Men
"Red House," Jimi Hendrix - studio & live versions
"Red Lenses," Rush
"Red Light," U2
"Red Rabbits," The Shins
"Red Right Ankle," The Decemberists
"Red Sector A," Rush

Wow, a lot more people here have Rush than I would have guessed. But it is the web.

Hm, I've only got three on my iPod. Somehow, all my versions of "Red House" aren't on here. I've really gotta fix that. Anyway:

"Red Barchetta", Rush
"Red Hot", Vanessa Mae
"Red Sarafan", Red Army Choir (Bonus "Red"!)

"Red Giant/White Dwarf" by Becker, Fagan, and Diaz (pre-Steely Dan)
"Red Hill Mining Town" by U2
"Red House" by Jimi Hendrix
"Red Integra" by Honest Bob and the Factory-to-Dealer Incentives
"Red Rose (Rózsafák)" by Omega
"Red's Dream" by Louisiana Red
"Redemption Song" by Bob Marley

a lot more people here have Rush than I would have guessed. But it is the web.

You're surprised? Rush's music and especially Neil Pearts lyrics don't really have much appeal beyond nerds, and philosophically minded nerds in particular. And to be even more specific: critically minded nerds who are incredulous of more common forms of religious epistemology. Look what site you're on.

"Hey Barkeep, I'm hungry, so pass me down those pickled eggs. And hurry"

Here's what I found:

"Red Dress" - Jonatha Brooke
"Red Way" - Ass Ponys

Outside the list, but since hearts have been broken:

"Redemption" - Jars of Clay
"Redemption" - Johnny Cash

Wait a second. The Ass Ponys had a song that wasn't "Little Bastard?"

How did that happen?

'MON THE SUFJAN (even if I don't have that song)

red bunny (it isn't actually red but the light inside is) - Fight Fire With Water (someone's blog I read's band's song)
Red Hill Mining Town - U2
Red House (Live) - Jimi Hendrix
The Red The White The Black The Blue - Hope of the States
Red Wine, Success! - Cold War Kids

Am I the only fan of The Fixx around here? Red Skies at Night might not be their best, but I they have some pretty good stuff...

Red Ink -- Deerhunter (obscure-ish)
Red Red Red -- Fiona Apple (Jon Brion version)

Does nobody else listen to Fiona Apple? Where's the crazy-girl-with-a-piano love?

Geds: The Ass Ponys had a superlative pop song called "Astronaut" that haunts me to this day.

Ha! Neanderthal! I click reload, and thanks to my superior Firefox client I'm already reading next week's LB.

"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds

I notice this is a Milton quote (well, Milton quoted it from Horace) of God defeating the rebel angels.

I'm thinking about getting either The Fixx's "Ultimate Collection" or the 20th Century Masters' "Best Of The Fixx." Is either worth it, or should I just buy the singles from iTunes or Amazon?

"Red Hot" - Vanessa Mae
"Red Light Fever" - Liz Phair
"Red Red Red" - Fiona Apple
"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds (Thanks for the video link, BTW)
"Red Water (Christmas Mourning)" - Type O Negative

Only three this week...

Red - Treble Charger
Red Dust - Iron and Wine and Calexico
Red Sails - Danny Michel

That last is a Bowie cover. He did a whole album of them. A whole album of folk-rock David Bowie covers.

I think I need to put that on right now.

"Red Pyramids" - Akira Yamaoka (From Silent Hill 2)
"Red Right Hand" - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds

Wasn't there also a song called "Red Red Wine"? I don't have it, but I remember liking it.

Only 50 songs for this one. Some duplicates, mostly Rush songs. I should have a copy of King Crimson's "Red," but it appears I do not. What else is fun?

"Red and Black," Les Miserables
"Red Flower Girl," Fruit Tree
"Red Jacket," Swåp
"Red Red Red," Hated Youth (no relation to the Fiona Apple track, I'm guessing.)
"Red Vines," Aimee Mann

Red Clay Halo -- Gillian Welch, the great
Red Dirt Girl -- Emmylou Harris, who I can't believe more of y'all don't have
Red River Valley -- my banjo teacher's instruction CD
------------------
Redemption -- Johnny Cash (mandatory)
Redemption Song -- Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, the haunting duet
