You Do, You Don't
it's like shedding your skin ...
"You Do," Aimee Mann
"You Do Something to Me," Sinead O'Connor
"You Don't Belong Here," Charlie Sexton
"You Don't Belong Here," Tonio K.
"You Don't Get Much," BoDeans
"You Don't Know Me," After Eleven
"You Don't Know Me," Emmylou Harris
"You Don't Know What Love Is," Chet Baker
"You Don't Love Me," Matthew Sweet
"You Don't Owe Me Nothing," Steve Taylor
"You Don't Treat Me No Good," Sonia Dada
"You Don't Know Me at All," Betty LaVette
Typing up this list it strikes me as a crime of sorts that Emmylou and Sam Llanas haven't recorded anything together.

"You don't have to say you love me": Dusty Springfield

"You Don't Care Nothin'," Rancid
"You Don't Have the Heart," Idlewild
"You Don't Know What Love is (You Just Do As You're Told)," White Stripes
And I think I'll take this opportunity to mention that I have 11 versions of Pearl Jam's "Yellow Ledbetter." It doesn't come up much and I rarely get to force it in to conversations, so there.

"You Do Something to Me", by Cole Porter, performed by the Andrews Sisters
"You Don't Know Me", by Ray Charles
"You Don't Know Where Your Interest Lies", by Simon & Garfunkel
"You Don't Love Me", by Jools Holland

I seem to be a negative person, since I've got no songs beginning with "You Do." As always, eliminating duplicates:
"You Don't Care Nothin'," Rancid
"You Don't Fool Me," Queen
"You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain," The Turtles
"You Don't Know What Love Is," Warren Zevon feat. Mark Isham
"You Don't Love Me Anymore," Weird Al Yankovic
I guess the recommendation of the week would be Warren Zevon's cover of the jazz standard "You Don't Know What Love Is."

I've got very little this week. I'm surprised to find I don't have the Aimee Mann - I have it on CD but that doesn't count for this exercise. Time to rejigger the iPod - Bachelor No. 2 is a great record. The Matthew Sweet song was one of the songs from Girlfriend I trimmed when I was trying to make space - that's one of the weaker cuts on that CD. Anyway:
"You Don't Know What Love Is" - Sonny Rollins
"You Don't Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You're Told)" - White Stripes
"You Don't Send Me" - Belle & Sebastian

What? No "You Don't Bring Me Flowers"?

I had a dozen songs in this list before I looked again and dropped everything that didn't have a "Do" or "Don't". Drat.
You Don't Know Me At All - Don Henley
You Don't Love Me Any More - "Weird Al" Yankovic

Posted by:Kayte | Feb 29, 2008 at 02:42 PM
Only 17 this week, and "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me" and "You Do" have already been mentioned, leaving me to mention:
"You Don't Know," Jean Grae (not my favorite Jean Grae track, but I dig it, and I have a fanboyish adoration for her stage name)
"You Don't Own Me," Rasputina (I like the original, but I love this cover)
And I'm going to mention "U Don't Dans 2 Tekno Anymore" by Alabama 3, even though it doesn't really count.

You Don't Send Me - Belle & Sebastian

I've noticed a predilection for BoDeans tracks on your lists in the past.
That makes me VERY happy.
