Es Tut Mir Leid, Evelyn
There's a flaming red horizon that screams our names ...
"Es Tut Mir Leid," Mark Heard
"Escher's World," Chagall Guevara
"Etcetera Whatever," Over the Rhine
"Eternal Life," Jeff Buckley
"Euphoria," Skatman Meredith
"Eurotrash Girl," Cracker
"Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," Ella Fitzgerald
"Ev'ry Time We Say Goodbye," Annie Lennox
"Evangeline," Matthew Sweet
"Eve of Destruction," The Dickies
"Eve of Destruction/Machines," Charlie McGloughlin
"Evelyn Is Not Real," My Morning Jacket
Charlie's little medley there is from one of my very Favorite Things. Charlie had a weekly show on our college's campus radio station (25 watts, baby, 25 watts of pure AM carrier current mono) called the "Radio Campfire." He'd sit down at a microphone with a guitar and a stack of cheat books and open the phone lines for requests. Charlie'd play whatever he felt like playing until the phone rang, and then he'd play whatever the caller wanted to hear. Even when it didn't quite work -- when he didn't know the song, or when whoever was working the sound board really wasn't up to the task of being recruited to sing backup on "California Dreaming" -- it still had the energy of live, without-a-net radio. But when it did work, nothing was better.
College nostalgia aside, this is something I'd love to hear a professional radio station try. That's probably never going to happen, but it should.

:sighs:
Go fish.

pretty slim for me this week
"Escape" - Journey
"Eternal Circle" - Bob Dylan
Posted by: wanderingoutlaw | May 16, 2008 at 08:26 AM
"Escape From The Atmosphere," Mannhein Steamroller
"Eurodance Megamix," The Cynic Project
"Eurotheme," Men Without Hats
"Every Breath You Take," The Police
"Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," The Police
"Everybody In The TARDIS (Type 40 Mix)," Matt Hawkins
"Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey," The Beatles
Wow. It's amazing how much a seven-song list can say about a person, isn't it?
At least one of the cuts here is in my possession off the original vinyl. I only purchased about two dozen LPs and perhaps sixty singles before the CD arrived (in part because I didn't have much spending money at the time). I still have them... but no turntable on which to play them. A shame; I'd love to transfer my Rocky Horror Audience Participation Album to MP3.

The only song I have in range that isn't related to a TV show is Thomas Dolby's "Europa and the Pirate Twins."
Posted by: Omorka | May 16, 2008 at 08:54 AM
"Escalator", Sam Gopal
"Estampida", Musica Vagantium
"Eternal Circle", Bob Dylan
"Ett gammalt bergtroll", Cornelis Vreeswijk
"Euchari", Garmarna
Short, weird list this week.

Oh, and I loved the Dickies' cover of 'Eve of Destruction'. :D
Posted by: Theo | May 16, 2008 at 09:43 AM
As always, leaving out what Fred already has:
"Et Ideo," Jocelyn Montgomery feat. David Lynch
"Eternal Flame," The Bangles
"Eternal Flame," Susana Hoffs
"E.T.I. (Extraterrestrial Intelligence)," Blue Oyster Cult
"Etienne D'aout," Malajube
"The Eton Rifles," The Jam
"Europa (Earth's Cry Heaven's Smile)," Santana
"European Female," The Stranglers
"European Oils," Destroyer
"Eve Of Destruction," Barry McGuire
"Eve Of Destruction," The Turtles
Most recommended: "The Eton Rifles," easily. "E.T.I." is a great choice for a geeky metalhead with a taste for the X-Files, but my impression is that Fred is not such a person. "European Female" and the Turtles' version of "Eve Of Destruction" are pretty good, but not the songs I would recommend for someone starting out on the Stranglers or the Turtles.

Theo: wow, someone else has heard of Garmarna.
(My Garmarna collection consists of one song, "Gamen/Vulture," which I got off a new music promo sampler back in the late 90s, so I can only say I've "heard of" them. But good stuff.)

Eurotrash Girl. The only thing I like off of Firehat and the reason I bought the album in the first place. I loved hearing it on the radio when the local DJ pointed out the hidden "Track 69."
I had just gotten back from my JYA when it hit the local airways and it fit so well with my own personal disconnect to the life I came back home to.

College nostalgia aside, this is something I'd love to hear a professional radio station try. That's probably never going to happen, but it should.
Out here in LA, one of our afternoon DJs is Steve Jones -- yes, Steve Jones from the Sex Pistols -- and he has a contest every day where he plays his guitar and whistles along and you have to figure out what the song is. If someone alerted his station to this idea, I wouldn't be surprised if he gave it a shot.

Meant to add: Of course, Steve is one of the most UNprofessional DJs you'll hear on the air (I've heard him answer his cell phone while broadcasting), but that's part of his charm.

WECR, Eastern College Radio.
A wave of nostalgia.
Freshman Todd--"Hello this is Todd. What can we play for you tonight."
Station Manager Fred trying not to laugh-- "Why yes Todd, please play 'If I had a Rocket Launcher' by that Canadian singer. I can't remember his name but the album is right there in the stacks."
Freshman Todd--"Sure thing! Right after this sweet Michael W. Smith song!" (So young and so stupid....)
Freshman Todd--Wow! My first request! Don't hyperventilate. Cue up the album. Fade down "Friends are Friends Forever and....
"That was MWS right here on WECR, Eastern College Radio! Hey here is a request going out to a listener on Doane. It is....(awkward pause) Bruce....Cock-Burn?"
Howls of laughter can be heard from Doane hall. Yet another unsuspecting freshman put in his place....
Thank you for the memories Fred. THe best part of the Campfire was the crackling of the fire in the background....
Have a great day!
Todd R.

Every year, Yo La Tengo does a fundraiser for some indie radio station in Jersey. If you call in and donate money, they'll play whatever you request. Or, rather, *attempt* to play whatever you request.
They released a CD of 'highlights' from these sessions: Yo La Tengo is Murdering the Classics. It's fun.
