Chili Chocolate Roulette is a slightly sadistic but mathematically pleasing pub game that you can win with advance knowledge. The way it works is this: you lay out a plate with thirteen chocolate candies and one chili pepper. Two players take turns to eat the chocolates: you can eat either one, two or three. Whoever is left with no chocolates to eat has to eat the chili.
How do you win? Well, if you go second you have to hope your opponent doesn't know the trick, but the basic rule is to make sure that your opponent is always left with a multiple of four. Say you go first - it goes like this:
- You take one, leaving twelve.
- If your opponent takes one, you take three, and vice versa; if your opponent takes two, so do you: that leaves eight.
- Repeat the maths, leaving four chocolates on the plate. At this point, no matter what your opponent takes, they're going to lose.
What pub games do you know that can be won by knowing the trick? Or indeed, pub games that are actually fair but fun?
